The reputed Times Higher Education World University ranking is often considered as one of the most widely observed university rankings in the world.
Every year, various ranking institutions release their rankings of top universities.
Here are the top 10 universities of the Times Higher Education for 2018 :
University of Oxford
The University of Oxford is at the first position in the Times Higher Education ranking for 2018. This is considered the oldest university in the English-speaking world. The founding date of this university is unknown. However, there is evidence that teaching took place as far back as 1096.
Location: The university is located in and around Oxford’s medieval city centre. It comprises 44 colleges and halls, and over 100 libraries.
Students : The university has around 22,000 students. Half of 22,000 students are undergraduates and over 40 per cent are international students from 140 countries of the world.
Famous Alumni: According to Times Higher Education website, Oxford has an alumni network of over 250,000 individuals, including more than 120 Olympic medalists, 26 Nobel Prize winners, seven poets laureate, and over 30 modern world leaders (Bill Clinton, Indira Gandhi and 26 UK prime ministers, among them).

University of Cambridge
The University of Cambridge is at the second position in the Times university ranking. It was founded in 1209. The university is considered the fourth-oldest surviving university in the world and the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world. It has over 100 libraries, which have more than 15 million books in total.
Location: The university is located in the centre of the city of Cambridge.
Students: It has more than 18,000 students who are from all cultures and corners of the world. Of them, 4,000 are international students from 120 different countries.
Famous Alumni: In total, 92 affiliates of the university have been awarded Nobel Prizes, covering every category.
California Institute of Technology
California Institute of Technology is at the third position in the Times ranking. This university is famous for its science and engineering research.
It has Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Caltech Seismological Laboratory and the International Observatory Network.
Location: The university is located in Pasadena, California, approximately 11 km away from downtown Los Angeles.
Student: The university has 2,209 students and 27 per cent of the students are international students.
Famous Alumni: The alumni and faculty of the university have been awarded 35 Nobel Prizes, one Fields Medal, six Turing Awards and 71 United States National Medal of Science or Technology. Four chief scientists of the US Air Force have also attended the institution.
Stanford University is at the 4th position in the Times ranking for 2018. The university was founded in 1885. Breakthroughs include the first successful heart-lung transplant, the debut of the computer mouse, and the development of digital music took place at Stanford. It is one of the largest campuses in the United States with 18 interdisciplinary research institutes and seven schools on a single campus.
Location: It is located in the heart of Silicon Valley and situated on 8,180 acres of land.
Students: It has more than 16,300 students, 2,180 faculty and 1,800 postdoctoral scholars. The university has students from all 50 U.S. states and more than 90 other countries.
Famous alumni: The university alumni include 19 Nobel laureates. The 31st president of the US, Herbert Hoover, was part of the first class at Stanford, and received a degree in geology in 1895.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Massachusetts Institute of Technology is at the fifth position in Times ranking for 2018. The university was founded in 1861. The university is credited to the first chemical synthesis of penicillin, the development of radar, the discovery of quarks, and the invention of magnetic core memory, which enabled the development of digital computers.
Location: It is located in the city of Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Students: The university has over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students and around 1,000 faculty members.
Famous Alumni: The university alumni are among 85 Nobel Laureates, 58 National Medal of Science winners, 29 National Medal of Technology and Innovation winners and 45 MacArthur Fellows. Former secretary-general of the United Nations Kofi Annan is one of its alumni.
Harvard is at the 6th position in Times ranking. It was founded in 1636 and is considered the oldest higher education institutions in the US. According to the university website, it was named after the College’s first benefactor, the young minister John Harvard of Charlestown, who upon his death in 1638 left his library and half his estate to the institution.
Location: The university is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Famous Alumni: According to the Times Higher Education website, the university has connections to more than 45 Nobel laureates, over 30 heads of state and 48 Pulitzer prizewinners. Thirteen US presidents have honorary degrees from the institution.

Princeton is at the 7th position in Times ranking. It was founded in 1746 as the College of New Jersey and was officially renamed Princeton University in 1896 in honour of the area where it is based.
According to the university website, the university has 42 doctoral departments and programs, 53 interdisciplinary undergraduate certificate programs, 18 Master’s degree programs and 36 academic departments.
Location: The university is located in New Jersey, United States. It is within easy reach of both New York City and Philadelphia.

Imperial College London
Imperial College London is at the 8th position in Times 2018 ranking. It is a science-based higher education institution. In 1907, the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City and Guilds College were combined to form Imperial College London.

Student: The college has around 15,000 students and 55 per cent of them are international students.

University of Chicago
The University of Chicago is at the ninth position in Times ranking. It was founded in 1890. According to its website, in 1907, the University of Chicago’s first Nobel laureate, Albert A. Michelson was recognized for his breakthrough advancements in measuring the speed of light.

ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich
ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich is at the 10th position in Times Higher Education ranking. It was founded in 1855 as the Federal Polytechnic School. At present, it is considered among some of the world’s most prestigious universities in science and technology.
Location : The university is located in Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city.
Student: It has 19,233 students and 38 per cent of them are international students.
