The election commission on Tuesday announced the schedule for mayoral elections of Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal City Corporation elections. Voting will take place on July 30.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda declared the election schedule after holding a meeting in this regard at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Tuesday. Nurul Huda said local MPs will not be able to carry out electioneering in their respective elections, although MPs from non-election area will be able to carry out the campaign.
According to the schedule, nomination papers submission in three cities on June 24. Scrutinize on July 1 and 2, the last date of nomination papers withdrawal is July 9 and symbol allocation on July 10.
The CEC said, we are taking preparations for holding three city corporation elections on a same day. The last date of nomination papers submission on June 28.
Scrutinize will take place on July 1-2. Appeal against scrutinize of nomination papers 3-5 July, appeal settlement on July 6-8, nomination papers withdrawal on July 9 and symbol allocation on July 10. Voting will take place on July 30.
KM Nurul Huda said, today date of more local government elections were fixed in the meeting. We are taking preparations for holding elections in five municipalities, five upazilas and some union council on July 25.
Giving information of getting letter from local government division the CEC said, there is no problem regarding the fixation of boundaries in the city corporations.
Also there is no legal complexity regarding the election. The election campaign will start after allocation of symbol.
Elections were held in Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal City Corporations on June 15, 2013. But the first meeting of each city corporation was held on different date.
The tenure of Rajshahi City Corporation will expire on October 5, Sylhet on October 8 and Barishal City Corporation on October 23.
